Case Study: Leading Through Transition with Clarity and Intent

Context

The client was navigating one of the most complex moments in a senior banking career:

  • Transitioning firms into an MD role

  • Managing a live deal where she was central to execution

  • Returning from maternity leave

  • Balancing internal politics, external opportunities, and personal priorities

At the same time, she was in multiple high-stakes conversations with senior leaders across banks.

Challenge

The surface challenge appeared to be:

  • How to manage the transition

  • Whether to bring a live deal to the new platform

  • How to position herself in senior conversations

The real challenge was deeper:

  • Over-indexing on short-term outcomes (the deal)

  • Navigating power dynamics without losing clarity

  • Showing up with confidence in rooms that define career trajectory

Approach

The work focused on clarity, positioning, and presence in high-stakes situations.

1. Reframing the Decision

Shifted from: “Can I bring this deal with me?”

To: “What decision best protects my long-term positioning and transition?”

This removed noise and anchored decisions to the next 3–5 years.

2. Structuring High-Stakes Conversations

Developed a clear framework for senior meetings:

  • Lead with credibility, commercial impact, and clarity of ask

  • Position as a franchise builder, not a candidate

  • Anchor conversations around pipeline, clients, and long-term build

3. Shifting Mindset: From Proving to Offering

Moved from: “How do I convince them?”

To: “Here’s the franchise I’m building. Does this platform align?”

This changed both tone and perception in the room.

4. Building Confidence Through Preparation

  • Clear messaging for resignation and transition

  • Defined narrative across stakeholders

  • Intentional preparation for each senior interaction

Confidence became a function of clarity, not personality.

Outcome

  • Navigated a complex transition with clarity and composure

  • Secured an MD role aligned with long-term goals

  • Showed up in senior conversations with greater structure and intent

  • Shifted from reactive execution to intentional leadership presence

Key Insight

At senior levels, the work is not just making the right decision.

It is showing up in the moment with clarity, conviction, and intent.
